The PHP Classes site announces today a new initiative named PHP Programming Innovation Award. Despite the coincidence, this is not an April fouls joke.

The PHP Programming Innovation Award is meant to provide recognition to developers who make outstanding contributions to the PHP community.

The award aims to honor developers who share components in the form of PHP classes of objects that provide innovative features or solve problems with approaches that provide additional value to the PHP applications of other developers.

The main goal of this award is to encourage developers to contribute PHP components that provide innovative features, instead of just replicating the features already provided by previously contributed components.

At the same time it is expected or hoped that the recognition and prizes, which can be earned by award nominees and winners, will motivate more capable developers, who otherwise would not participate, to make contribution.

The PHP community has grown naturally without a marketing force persuading developers to adopt it, unlike other languages that are backed by big companies with large budgets to invest in huge marketing campaigns.

This award also has an implicit goal to inspire other sites or companies to promote PHP and its community by means of other initiatives, hopefully different from this one, that focus on motivating and providing recognition to individuals or groups who make outstanding contributions to the PHP community and foster the continuation of its growth.

Cooperating is better than competing. Cooperate and the community will embrace you.

This award will be repeated every month. At the beginning of each month, the most innovative classes published in the previous month will be announced on this page:

Here, users of the site may also vote on which of the nominated classes they think deserves to win the prize. The page of each nominated class will also exhibit an award nominee symbol and a comment text justifying the nomination.

By the end of the next month, the author with the most votes may select up to 2 prizes provided by sponsors. Other nominees may also win prizes if there are enough sponsors providing them.

Many companies that develop products of interest for PHP developers were invited to participate as sponsor. The response was overwhelming. The current list of sponsors providing prizes include: NuSphere, ActiveState, Zend, PHPArchitect, Sitepoint, SAMS and O'Reilly.

Site subscribers may also receive alert messages once a month when there are winners and new nominees to be announced. There is a new subscriber option that lets you control whether you want new winners and nominees announcement messages.

For now please go to the Award page and pass on the word to everybody who may be interested in participating.
